The European Union has launched a consultation to gather opinion on the four carbon dioxide (CO₂) transport infrastructure projects proposed for the latest list of European Projects of Common Interest (PCI). The deadline for responses is 15 August 2017.

PCIs are energy infrastructure projects spanning state borders that support the Energy Union vision and are eligible for funding from the Connecting Europe Facility and other assistance. This third list is the first to include cross-border CO₂ transport, as well as electricity and natural gas transport infrastructure, which have been involved previously.

The four projects that have been proposed for the list are:

  • CO₂ transport between Teesside, Eemsehaven and a storage site on the Norwegian Continental Shelf – led by Statoil
  • The Rotterdam Nucleus – led by the Port of Rotterdam Authority
  • The Teesside CO₂ Hub – led by Tees Valley Combined Authority
  • The CO₂-SAPLING Project (CO₂ Shipping And PipeLine Infrastructure and North Sea ReGeneration) – led by Pale Blue Dot Energy

The Global CCS Institute has published a page giving more background and with links to further information on the four projects.

SCCS is a partner in the CO₂-SAPLING project, which grows and builds out from the Acorn CCS Project, recently awarded feasibility study funding.

We would encourage as many people as possibly to respond to the consultation, which involves a very simple questionnaire (click on button above), only requiring a YES/NO response to a question on support for the projects being listed. There is also space for a short comment and the option of sending an additional response by e-mail.

SCCS believes that all four projects should be supported at this stage to maximise the opportunity for progress in establishing CO₂ transport infrastructure.
