As the world looks toward COP31 in Türkiye to accelerate global climate action, SCCS, based at the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute, The University of Edinburgh, is proud to announce the return of its live-moderated, world-leading, free online course on carbon capture and storage (CCS) — a vital technology in the transition to net zero.
The massive open online course (MOOC) on CCS welcomes learners worldwide and requires no prior knowledge of the subject. Running over five weeks from 3rd November 2026, the course provides an engaging and comprehensive exploration of the science, technology, and policy of CCS. Developed and delivered by experts at The University of Edinburgh, it combines foundational knowledge with real-world case studies, practical exercises, and opportunities for interactive discussion with moderators and peers.
Dr. Erika Palfi, SCCS Programme Manager and the course organiser, said: “People need to be able to assess the claims made about climate solutions. Where can CCS make a useful contribution? What are its limitations, and what does storing CO₂ safely involve? This course gives learners the knowledge to explore these questions, weigh the evidence and take part in informed discussions about the transition to net zero.”
Now in its live-moderated format once again, the course continues to grow its global reach and impact. More than 54,000 individuals have completed the course to date, gaining the knowledge and tools to understand and communicate the role of CCS in addressing climate change. This milestone demonstrates the power of accessible education to connect global communities around climate action.
Dr. Palfi added, “One of the most valuable aspects of the course is the discussion between learners from different countries, professions and backgrounds. Returning to live moderation gives us the opportunity to support those conversations, answer questions and help learners connect the course material to issues that matter to them, whether in their work, studies or communities.”
