As the global community gears up for COP28 in the United Arab Emirates to address the urgent issue of climate change, Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS), based at the University of Edinburgh, is excited to announce the re-launch of its live-moderated, world-leading, free course on carbon capture and storage (CCS), a vital technology for achieving net zero.
The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) CCS is available to learners worldwide. This course requires no prior knowledge of the subject, and runs for five weeks, starting on the 21st November. Developed and delivered by leading academics at the University of Edinburgh the course offers a comprehensive journey from fundamental concepts to intricate details. It includes real-world case studies, hands-on exercises, and ample opportunities for questions and discussions.
Dr. Erika Palfi, the course organiser, emphasised the crucial role of CCS in mitigating climate change, stating, "The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has unequivocally stated that CCS is indispensable in our efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C. However, the urgency of the situation requires us to rapidly expand our CCS infrastructure, which in turn necessitates equipping people worldwide with the necessary knowledge and skills. CCS offers a vast array of applications; it not only prevents carbon dioxide emissions in industries from reaching the atmosphere but also contributes to the removal of existing atmospheric carbon dioxide. It's a cornerstone in our climate mitigation strategy, offering both environmental benefits and economic prospects."
Previous participants on the course have described it as essential learning and very accessible. To date, over 33,600 individuals have completed this course and now, even more will benefit: since last year, the course has been available in Mandarin.
Dr. Palfi highlighted the importance of this expansion step, taken last year, stating, "In the face of the urgent climate crisis, making this course accessible to learners worldwide is paramount. Our aim is to empower individuals from diverse backgrounds with the knowledge and tools to make a positive impact. By sharing our expertise internationally, we strengthen the global effort to combat climate change."
Registration is currently open in both English and Mandarin languages and both languages are available on edX and Coursera.
