As the world prepares for COP29 in Azerbaijan to address the urgent issue of climate change, Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS), based at the University of Edinburgh, is excited to announce the return of its live-moderated, world-leading, free course on carbon capture and storage (CCS), a vital technology for achieving net zero.
The massive open online course (MOOC) CCS is available to learners worldwide. This course requires no prior knowledge of the subject, and runs for five weeks, starting on the 4th November 2024. Developed and delivered by leading academics at the University of Edinburgh the course offers a comprehensive journey from fundamental concepts to intricate details. It includes real-world case studies, hands-on exercises, and ample opportunities for questions and discussions.
Dr. Erika Palfi, the course organiser, emphasised the crucial role of CCS in mitigating climate change, stating, "COP29 marks another crucial moment in our global climate response, and carbon capture and storage remains at the forefront of viable solutions. Through this course, we aim to deepen global understanding of CCS, empowering learners to take active roles in shaping sustainable industries and policies. Every individual who gains knowledge of CCS brings us a step closer to net zero."
Previous participants on the course have described it as essential learning and very accessible. To date, over 43,500 individuals have completed this course and now, even more will benefit: since last year, the course has been available in Mandarin.
Dr. Palfi highlighted the importance of this expansion step, taken last year, stating, "I With CCS education accessible to even more people worldwide, especially now in multiple languages, we’re equipping a global network of learners with practical skills and insights. Our mission is not only to teach CCS but to inspire action—whether through innovation, advocacy, or policy—to tackle the climate crisis with urgency and informed ambition. "
Registration is currently open in both English and Mandarin languages and both languages are available on edX and Coursera.
